Ever since George Washington became our first president in 1789, the US Mint has issued an impressive series of massive (2.75-3" diameter) high relief bronze medals featuring a portrait of the president on the obverse. The early ones, before the Civil War were peace medals, and were used as gifts to native Americans; the reverse illustrating friendship between them and the settlers. From Abraham Lincoln onward, the reverse commemorates their inauguration. Private mints also created similar large semi official presidential inaugural medals. The US Mint issues have been minted and re-minted over the years, so most were made in the last half of the 20th century, and are not from the period. The US Mint's current price for the few presidents they offer (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, T. Roosevelt, FDR, JFK, and Carter thru Obama) is $160 each.
